Il Polar prima del Polar: il poliziesco italo-americano tra fine Ottocento e gli anni Trenta del Novecento

Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature ComparateBetween late XIX and the first 30 years of the XX Century some Italians immigrated to the United States – such as Bernardino Ciambelli Italo Stanco Garibaldi Marto Lapolla Louis Forgione Michael Fiaschetti and Prosper Buranelli – wrote some texts that starting from the typical features of Mystery (serialization and incardination of the fabula in a specific urban context) together with some of the characteristic elements of the Hard boiled never lose sight of the peculiar 'mission' of political economic and social denunciation. Taking the political and social problems as the primary key of their works these writers want to remove the defamatory role attributed by the public opinion fomented by the press to Italian immigrated community. Their works don’t have the main intent to stage detectives that can solve a case or unmask a culprit but rather they aim to denounce social distortions corruption and injustices suffered by an entire community and not least to indicate the picture of what on the contrary that same society could have been.

Hydraulic kinetics of the graft union in different Olea europaea L. scion/rootstock combinations

The hydraulic resistance of young olive trees grafted on rootstocks with contrasting size-controlling potential was measured 30, 90, 360 and 480 days after grafting. Olive (Olea europaea L.) clones inducing plant vigorous growth (Leccino ‘Minerva’, LM) or dwarfing (Leccino ‘Dwarf’, LD) were studied in different scion/rootstock combinations (LD/LD, LD/LM, LM/LD, LM/LM). Plants growing on LD root systems developed lower leaf surface areas (about 50% less) than plants grafted on LM rootstocks. Graft union represented the largest fraction (up to 85%) of whole-plant hydraulic resistance 30 days after grafting, and still represented an important fraction of it 2 months later (40–55%). Four-hundred and eighty days after grafting the hydraulic resistance of the graft union became negligible (<3%) with no difference among the different scion/rootstock combinations. Our data reinforce the idea of graft hydraulics not playing a role in depressing the vigour of the scion as observable in adult plants grafted onto dwarfing rootstocks. La Sicilia negli Orsi di Dino Buzzati e Lorenzo Mattotti

Nella fiaba illustrata di Dino Buzzati La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia (1945) e nella sua trasposizione filmica ad opera di Lorenzo Mattotti (2019) l’ambientazione siciliana è determinante. In entrambi i casi la Sicilia è un’isola con un grande vulcano – trasfigurata in un ambiente fantastico o riscritta secondo alcuni stereotipi – che i due autori utilizzano con accezioni diverse nella costituzione dell’ecosistema delle loro narrazioni. Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature ComparateSicily in Bears of Dino Buzzati and Lorenzo Mattotti · In Dino Buzzati’s illustrated fairy tale The Famous Invasion of the Bears in Sicily (1945) and its film adaptation by Lorenzo Mattotti (2019) the Sicilian setting is decisive. In both cases Sicily is an island with a large volcano – transfigured into a fantastic setting or rewritten according to certain stereotypes – that the two authors use with different meanings within the ecosystem of their narratives. Only through a comparison between the two works will it be possible to distinguish the representation of the two Sicilies which are narrated within an interval of about seventy years. If one does not consider the story of the Bears merely a children’s fairy tale using simplistic stylistic devices but on the contrary sees it as an opportunity for the author to deal with serious and complex issues such as an ante litteram Ecocritical perspective or questions of inter-group conflicts derived from Subaltern or Migration Studies the images of the two Sicilies can provide altogether new interpretations.
